OEM Kia Brakes
Most cars and SUVs have one of two types of automotive brake systems, if not both. Both use master brake cylinders, one or more brake pistons, brake lines, and brake hoses. When you press your foot against the brake pedal, that causes the pistons to pressurize brake fluid and send it from the master brake cylinder through the lines and hoses. What happens at the other end is where the two systems differ.
The Two Brake Systems
The first kind of braking system is a drum brake system. With this type, the fluid forces a brake shoe to fasten to a brake drum to create the friction that slows, and eventually stops, your vehicle's wheels.
The other kind is a disc brake system. Here, the fluid pressure makes brake calipers close brake pads onto the brake rotors to generate that resistance.
Learn the Signs of Failing Brakes
Brake systems can begin to go bad over time, though. Symptoms include:
- Your dash warning light comes on
- It takes more time and distance to stop
- You hear squealing, squeaking, or grinding noises when you brake
- The brake pedal feels soft or squishy
- Your Kia pulls to one side when you brake
